Look no further than USC to see value of not leaving early

May 1st, 2008, 9:49 am by MARCIA C. SMITH/THE REGISTER

If last weekend’s NFL Draft taught any lessons to the USC Trojans, one was that staying in school — and putting in a senior season of pro-style training in college football — pays off.

USC had more players drafted than any other college. Of the 10 Trojans selected, nine were seniors, including several fifth-year players. Offensive guard Chilo Rachal, the sole Trojan junior to make himself eligible for the draft, was takellis1.jpgen in the second round, 39th overall, by San Francisco.

Defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis, who was picked seventh overall by New Orleans, and linebacker Keith Rivers, who was taken ninth overall by Cincinnati, weren’t projected to be high first-rounders last season. But one more season playing and proving themselves in the Trojans’ nationally renowned defense vaulted them into the Top 10 — and its wealth.

Chargers have earned right to draft who they want

April 29th, 2008, 9:00 am by Mark Whicker, ocregister.com

You shouldn’t evaluate an NFL draft until at least a couple of years after it happens. That does not mean you can’t evaluate the drafters. cason2.jpgcason2.jpg

cason2.jpgcason2.jpgThe Chargers, Patriots, Colts, Steelers and a few other elicason2.jpgcason2.jpgte teams have earned the benefit of the doubt. They could pick Mr. Bean in the draft and you’d say, “Well, that seems like a bit of a reach but there must be a master plan here.” cason3.jpgcason3.jpg

San Diego took Arizona cornerback Antoine Cason (below) in the first round. He’s the ex-Los cason2.jpgcason2.jpgcason2.jpgcason2.jpgAlamitos High star who has been very much in evidence the past few years, especially against USC and UCLA. There is the usual scouting gobbledegook about whether he turns his hips properly, but he’s a proven playmaker, which is what the Chargers go on. They generally want producers, not computer printouts. cason21.jpgcason21.jpg

cason3.jpg

With Antonio Cromartie and Quentin Jammer, cornerback wasn’t a great need, but Cason can also play safety, and you can never get enough coverage people.

General manager A.J. Smith could have taken a wide receiver, but then he must have read Coldhardfootballfacts.com, the outstanding website that, last week, pointed out that only 12 wide receivers, of the 51 taken in first rounds since 1996, have become stars. The Chargers prefer to wait until a receiver proves himself elsewhere. Their first WR “pick” was Chris Chambers, whom they got from Miami.

The Chargers have drafted themselves into complete dominance of the AFC West and they are probably the early favorite to win the AFC Championship this year. With a guy like Smith making the calls, they’re always innocent until proven guilty on Draft Day.

Today’s poll — Who should the Raiders draft at No. 4?

April 25th, 2008, 10:27 am by Adam Maya, staff writer since 2006

Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long has been signed and sealed and is about to be delivered to the Miami Dolphins as the No. 1 pick in Saturday’s NFL Draft. The next few choices are anyone’s guess.

The Raiders are coming off a 4-12 season in which they were 25th in overall offense and 22nd in overall defense. So we ask:

If available, who should the Raiders draft with the fourth overall pick?

From Spygate to court dates

April 23rd, 2008, 2:17 pm by Adam Maya, staff writer since 2006

The story that will not go away might be reaching a climax. Former Patriots’ video assistant Matt Walsh has reached an agreement to meet with NFL league officials in May.

Whatever it takes to spawn more lawsuits. I can’t wait. If you remember, some Rams supportwarner1.jpgers have taken this pretty seriously.

I don’t get it. That game was played more than six years ago; Rams quarterback Kurt Warner had barely scratched the surface in the art of fumbling. Why can’t he let go of their defeat to the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI as well as he does the football?

But if he really wants to go to court, I know a judge that keeps it real.

Your Rams on the clock

Rams

Now that Miami ended any drama about the No. 1 pick, we turn to the most recent team before the Dolphins to use the top selection on an offensive lineman.

Next up: Your (OK, St. Louis’) Rams.

Whicker column: Dolphins have a lot on line with No. 1 pick

Michigan’s Jake Long

Note: Since this was written, the Dolphins announced that they had signed Michigan’s Jake Long and will select him with the No. 1 pick. Click here to read the release on the Dolphins’ Web site.

The Miami Dolphins are on the clock and might well take Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long with the first pick in the NFL draft on Saturday.

As Aretha Franklin might say, you better think.

The previous Big Ten offensive linemen to go that high was Iowa’s Robert Gallery. He was the No. 2 pick in the 2004 draft. The Raiders took him amid very little second-guessing from the draft experts. Then the Raiders took quarterback Jamarcus Russell with the first pick in the ’07 draft. Oh, how inefficient. They could have used that No. 2 pick in ’04 to pick Philip Rivers.

The NFL schedule is coming!

April 14th, 2008, 12:08 pm by Michael Lev, staff writer

Each team’s opponents for the 2008 NFL season were finalized when the ‘07 regular season ended.

But there’s something oddly exhilarating about seeing all those at Oaklands and vs. Jacksonvilles laid out in week-by-week and team-by-team form.

Yes, it’s the ‘08 NFL schedule, and it’s coming to a flat screen near you at 11 a.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday.

That’s when NFL Network’s two-hour schedule show — yes, two hours — begins.

Concurrently, NFL.com will make the league and team-by-team schedules available throughout the day.

Gumbel leaves NFL Network booth

April 11th, 2008, 2:01 pm by Michael Lev, staff writer

It was never a perfect marriage, and now the divorce is official: Bryant Gumbel is relinquishing his play-by-play duties for NFL Network.

Gumbel had served in that role for the past two seasons on NFL Network’s eight-game package of Thursday- and Saturday-night games. Read the rest of this entry »

Chargers offer travel deal for London game

April 9th, 2008, 2:07 pm by Michael Lev, staff writer

brees0409.jpgWant to boo Drew Brees (right) in person, Chargers fans?

The team is promoting a travel package to London that will enable you to do so and enjoy some other cool perks as well.

Through San Diego’s Aer Travel, the Chargers are offering two packages for their Oct. 26 game against the Saints at Wembley Stadium — one for $3,900 per person, the other for $4,500. Both include a non-stop flight from San Diego to London, a six-night hotel stay and a ticket to the game.

A quick check of some travel sites reveals that you could do this trip for less. But as I mentioned, there are perks, including: Read the rest of this entry »
