Billy Gillispie at the Improv

gillispie0319.jpgANAHEIM — I can see Billy Gillispie being a big hit in recruits’ living rooms.

The first-year Kentucky coach, via Texas A&M (which is playing here too, by the way), is constantly smiling, seems self-effacing and has a quicker wit than a lot of us media lunkheads.

When a New York Times reporter prefaced his question by saying he didn’t keep up with Kentucky on a daily basis, Gillispie retorted: “You’re the only one who doesn’t keep up with our team on a daily basis.”

When his response generated nary a chuckle, Gillispie said: “That was supposed to be funny. Obviously it wasn’t.”

At which point the room broke up in laughter.

Earlier, a reporter asked Gillispie about BYU coach Dave Rose, intimating that Rose had been on Gillispie’s staff at one point.

“I didn’t think he was on our staff,” Gillispie said, “but I have some memory lapses every once in a while.”
